The recovery suite at Wellness Elite Fitness is the part of the facility the camera has the hardest time with. It does not move, it does not speak, and it does not photograph the way the strength floor does. Which is why we made a film about it.

The piece is a nine-minute procedural. No narration. Five modalities, each shown in full, at the cadence a member actually experiences them. Cryotherapy: the plunge, three minutes, the slow return to warmth. Hyperbaric oxygen: the seal of the chamber, the pressurization, the hour of reading inside it. Infrared sauna: twenty minutes at 140 degrees, a single towel, the quiet. Red light: ten minutes, nothing visible happening. Pneumatic compression: forty minutes, legs elevated, wave patterns cycling from foot to hip.

The film does not argue for any of these modalities. It shows them. The argument is in the pace of the edit. A member who has been told that recovery is a perk, a photo opportunity, a marketable ritual, watches the film and realizes that recovery is a discipline — dosed, timed, rarely glamorous, and often boring. That boredom is the point.

The recovery suite is five modalities, and the instinct of most new members is to do a little of each every day. That is a misunderstanding. These are stressors, most of them. They are hormetic. Dr. Swet Chaudhari, MD  ·  on dosing the week

Director’s note

We filmed in the recovery suite on three consecutive Tuesdays in March, between six and nine in the morning, when the facility is coldest and the light through the east windows is at its most useful. We used one camera on sticks, one handheld, no gimbals, no drone. The sound is the rooms — the compressor, the door seal, the heat element. The edit is long on purpose. We wanted a film a member could put on in the evening and watch quietly, the way one watches a rainstorm. It is not a commercial. It is an object.
