Catherine is forty-seven. She has been a member of Wellness Elite Fitness for eighteen months. She asked to be identified by first name only. The film follows her through a single weekday in February — not the first weekday of her membership, not a dramatic one, but a representative one. A Wednesday in the middle of a working week, eighteen months into a different life.
The film is organized in seven quiet segments: the morning (ten minutes, before the family is up); the commute (eighteen minutes, no podcast, one phone call to a coworker); the first meeting of the day (filmed by permission, audio replaced); the lunch (brought from home, eaten in ten minutes); the training session with Coach Katie (three lifts, forty-five minutes); the drive home (the same eighteen minutes, different light); and the last hour of the day (dinner with the family, the dishwasher, the bedroom light off by ten-fifteen).
Director’s note
The story we did not want to tell is the before-and-after story. The story we wanted to tell is the Wednesday story. The proof of a protocol is not a transformation photograph. The proof is an unremarkable day that is slightly better structured than the same day two years earlier. The film tries to honor that. It is slow. It is ordinary. It is the point.
